Dick Trickle
Wausau, Wis. (September 5, 1974) – Dick Trickle of Wisconsin Rapids drove his newly-built 1970 Mustang to wins in two of three 50-lap features Thursday night and was the overall winner as Tri-R Promotion’s $40,000 North American Short Track Championships moved into Wausau.
A sizeable State Park Speedway crowd, despite cold temperatures, watched as Trickle lapped all but three cars in the first 50-lapper, and then came from his 13th starting position to win the final 50-lap race of the night.
Trickle’s first win came in a race for even numbered qualifiers, he started on the inside of the fifth row, leaving the field far behind. Tom Maier of Midland, Mich., one-half of the “Going, Gone” team, finished second with Jim Sauter of Necedah third and Bobby Gunn of Madison, driving Trickle’s 1973 car, was fourth.
Trickle moved through the final feature field, which started the 16 fastest qualifiers, battled for a time with Tony Diano of Canton, Ohio, and then assumed the lead for good with 15 laps to go. Diano wound up second with Tom Reffner of Rudolph third and Bob Senneker of Dorr, Mich., taking fourth.
The second 50-lap feature, featuring the odd numbered qualifiers, saw Reffner claim his first feature win of the season at State Park Speedway. Senneker was second, Jim Back third and Diano fourth.
All 16 starters in the final 50-lapper broke the 15-second barrier in qualifying with Back leading the way. The Vesper speedster turned the quarter-mile in 14.407 seconds, slightly faster than Joe Shear of South Beloit, Ill., 14.414 seconds.
The All-States Pursuit race featured the fastest qualifier from each of the six states represented. Diano won with Back taking second, Terry Bivins of Shawnee Mission, Kan., third, Mike Miller of New Prague, Minn., fourth, Shear fifth, and Senneker sixth.
