1971 – Stover Wins Osky Main

Stan Stover

Oskaloosa, Iowa (September 1, 1971) - A feature win allowed Stan Stover of Reinbeck to edge closer to the point leader, Big John Moss of Iowa City, Wednesday night at the Southern Iowa Raceway, while Dan Dickey of Packwood stormed into the third spot in the standings. Only two nights of racing remain.

Stover came from the last row to win in the first heat, placing him on the pole position in the main. He never relinquished the lead despite four restarts and a pressing pursuit by Dickey.

The first restart, an original lineup, came on the first lap when a car went off the second turn, but returned to the race. Moss took second after the green flag, but before the second lap could be completed, a six-car pile-up on the third and fourth turns caused another restart. Cars belonging to Ed Pilcher of Bloomfield, Jerry Pilcher of Ottumwa, and Phil Reece of Des Moines, were eliminated from the competition.

On the restart, Dickey and Don Hoffman of Des Moines slipped by Big John to follow Stover. Dickey went a little high on the first and second turns of the fourth lap, and challenger Hoffman dropped off slightly. Moss took advantage of the let-off and went into the third spot.

Bob Thompson of Des Moines spun out on turns three and four of the fifth lap, causing a restart. During the line-up, Moss pulled his car out of the race due to a hole in the radiator hose.

Stover again took the lead, followed by Dickey, Danny Clements of Rhodes and Pokey West of West Chester, originally started from the inside of the seventh row.

A spin-out by Ron Perdock of Washington on the third and fourth turns of the seventh lap caused the final restart.

Throughout the remainder of the race, Dickey dogged the heels of Stover. About the thirteenth lap. West and Chris Maurer of Colfax, who also started in the seventh row, took the third and fourth spots away from Clements, who finished fifth.

Stover attributed his win to staying in the groove and luck.

“Dickey was running good and the stretches were too slick to do much passing,” he said. “I managed to finish, and the way things have been going, that’s something,” grinned the tall, 30-year-old Stover, who drives a truck at Reinbeck, about 100 miles from Oskaloosa.

“Little things’’ have kept him from placing very high lately, although he has maintained his second place standing here.

Dickey, who was only 10 points from fourth place West last week, racked up enough points Wednesday night to take third place from Ron Hemsted of Lone Tree by winning the third heat and the Australian and capturing second in the feature. West also passed Hemsted and is now 80 points behind Dickey.

“Wish it’d been second,” said Dickey of the change. “It’s a better place to start in the season championship!” The lineup in the final race is determined by point standings.

Hemsted, who placed second in the second heat, didn’t compete in the remainder of the night’s program because of a bad oil pump.

The event which had the crowd roaring was the first heat. A controversy over the start in which Pokey West was struck, caused the crowd to look upon the flagman with disfavor. West stopped twice on the back stretch, but an original restart was not called.

The flagman contended West did not come to a complete stop. West, who obviously was not pleased with the decision, did not run the race. Afterward, he said he had nothing to say. “It doesn’t pay to stay mad on the racetrack,” he said.

West easily won the consolation event. A heat win would have placed him on the pole in the feature. Instead, he worked his way up through the field to take third.
