1960 – Morgan Sets 3 Fair Race Marks

St. Paul, Minn. (September 5, 1960) – Sonny Morgan of Beaumont, Tex., set three new International Motor Contest Association world records, winning the NorthStar 350-mile stock car feature on Monday afternoon at the Minnesota State Fair.

A crowd announced at 28,745 looked on as Morgan wheeled his 1959 Chevrolet to a dominating performance.

His records were –

· 125 miles in 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 49.68 seconds compared to 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 29.11 seconds set by Ernie Derr a week ago.

· 150 miles set in 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 29.18 seconds compared to 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 50.55 seconds set by Derr in 1958.

· 175 miles in 2 hours, 51 minutes, and 31.36 seconds compared to 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 17.91 seconds set by Derr in 1958.

Morgan was the only driver to complete the 350 laps. He beat Lenny Funk of Otis, Kan., driving a 1959 Plymouth, by three laps and third place finisher Ernie Derr of Keokuk, Iowa, in a 1960 Pontiac, by six circuits.
