Des Moines, Iowa (August 18, 1985) – Young Billy Boat of Phoenix, Ariz., gained the pole position after a pre-start incident, then sped to victory Sunday afternoon in the Regional World of Outlaws sprint car feature before an estimated 4,000 fans at the Iowa State Fair.
Boat held off Rocky Hodges of Des Moines for the victory, while Shane Carson of Oklahoma City, Okla., finished third.
Bobby Davis Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., was the fastest qualifier at 20.747 seconds while heat wins went to Bruce Drottz of Des Moines, Gabby Lusk of Jackson, Minn., and Carson. Max Dumesny of Australia won the last chance race.
The feature was delayed 15 minutes following an incident involving cars driven by front row starters Randy Smith of Mt. Ayr and Tim Green of Carmichael, Calif.
After two “false starts” the two cars came together in turn three and Smith’s sprinter wound up on its side in the infield. Smith charged from his sprinter for Green and had to be restrained by officials.
Green and Smith both restarted at the rear of the field. Smith finished eighth and Green was credited with tenth.
