Sedalia, Mo. (August 13, 1983) – Joe Kosiski of Omaha had led the 100-mile race on the one-mile dirt oval at the Missouri State Fairgrounds each of the last four years but had never won it.

It was a different story Saturday as Kosiski breezed to an easy victory.

Billy Moyer Jr. of Des Moines led the first 32 laps before he was passed by Kosiski on the inside of the front straightaway. For several laps, it was a side-by-side trophy dash between the pair.

Kosiski said afterwards he was only trying to stay ahead of Moyer, while Moyer said his car was just running well.

Whatever the reason, the large crowd on hand loved the side-by-side racing.

All leaders pitted on lap 36 and Shorty Acker of Windsor moved into the lead. Acker led until lap 61 when he was overtaken by Kosiski. While Acker and Kosiski were battling for the lead, Moyer dropped out with a broken fuel pump.

Acker took the lead again on lap 81 when Kosiski made two pit stops. Once back on the track, Kosiski went into the lead for good.

Acker had a comfortable margin for second place until he ran out of gas after 97 miles. Unable to restart his racer, Acker watched the last three laps from the pits.

After the race, Acker stated he thought he could run 100 miles on a tank of gas.
