1979 – Zwanziger Wins Main, 15,000 Watch at Monticello

Monticello, Iowa (August 11, 1979) – More than 15,000 spectators were on hand as stock car racing in four classes was the grandstand attraction at the Jones County Fair.

With the huge throng of spectators present, late models, sportsman, altered street stocks and unaltered street stocks represented the 115 cars in the pit area.

Bill Zwanziger of Waterloo won the late model 25-lapper as well as copping the first heat. Bob Jaeger of Dubuque, who finished second to Zwanziger in the feature was the other heat winner.

Bob Kinsella of Dubuque won the sportsman feature with first heat winner Bernie Juliar of Hudson finishing second. Scott Braun of Cedar Falls was the other heat winner.

In the unaltered street stock main event, Mark Bone of Monticello came out on top with Bob Bossard of Monticello finishing second. Heat wins were taken by Don Ardufer of Monticello, Tim Cable of Cedar Rapids, Larry Freekson of Cedar Rapids and Bone.

The altered street stock main was won by Dave Naylor of Scotch Grove, who also won his heat race. Chopper Safely of Marion finished runner-up to Naylor. Gus Hughes of Monticello was the other heat winner.
