1979 – Kinser Wins Jayhawk Nationals Sprint Title

Steve Kinser

Topeka, Kan. (August 6, 1979) – Steve Kinser of Bloomington, Ind., continued his domination of the World of Outlaws sprint car scene as he won the 25-lap feature event Monday night in the Jayhawk Nationals.

Kinser has won five of the last six World of Outlaws events.

Gary Rush of Sydney, Australia, grabbed the lead from his pole position and led the feature for the first eight laps before Kinser took the lead and led the rest of the way. On lap 10. Doug Wolfgang of Sioux Falls, S.D., moved past Rush for second place to challenge Kinser.

Wolfgang pressured Kinser for the last 15 circuits but was unable to move past the defending Jayhawk Nationals’ champion.

Fifty-two cars drew for starting heat positions.

Sammy Swindell of Memphis, Tenn., flipped his sprinter on the ninth lap of the feature, but was uninjured. Three other cars also got upside down during the evening’s program, but no drivers were injured.

Rush won the first heat, Thad Dosher of Topeka, Kan., took the second, Ron Shuman of Tempe, Ariz., the third, Tim Green of Des Moines, Iowa, the fourth, Bubby Jones of Indianapolis the fifth and Bill Robison of Topeka, Kan., the sixth.
