Jimmy Boyd & Doug Wolfgang
Mason City, Iowa (August 4, 1977) – Doug Wolfgang of Des Moines finished just third in his heat but won the trophy dash and then the main event of the special sprint car program at the North Iowa Fairgrounds on Thursday night.
Wolfgang trailed Butch Bahr of Grand Island, Neb., for the first seven laps of the race but when Bahr drifted too high in turn two of the eighth lap, Wolfgang, Leland McSpadden of Tempe, Ariz., and Jimmy Boyd of Dixon, Calif., all slipped by him.
McSpadden ran third for the next five laps. Then, driving hard for second place, his engine began overheating and he was forced to retire on lap 14.
Wolfgang ran unchallenged for the remainder of the feature event and took home $440 for his efforts. Boyd, Bahr, Dave Engebretson of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Steve Hanline of Bonaparte rounded out the top-five finishers.
The total purse for the sprint car/street stock card was $2,300.
Joe Jandro of Faribault, Minn., held off a late challenge by Kim DeVries of Hollandale, Minn., to capture the street stock feature.
