1977 – Hansen collects Proctor Coins in Silver 1000 Victory

Proctor, Minn. (August 9, 1977) – Curt Hansen led a charge of Ed Sanger-built cars as he won the 50-lap Silver 1000 Tuesday night at Proctor Speedway. Sanger chassis machines swept the top seven places as Hansen won $1,500 in silver dollars for his 23rd late model victory of the season.

Hansen, who started fifth, led 44 of the event’s 50 laps, taking command on lap 7 from Tom Nesbitt. He was never seriously challenged after that, despite six restarts that bunched the field. The Dike, Iowa hot shoe pulled away from the pack each time.

With Hansen firmly in front, battles began for the runner-up positions. Tom Bartholomew of Waterloo, Iowa, overhauled Nesbitt to gain third place on lap 25, and he passed Tom Steuding for second place four laps later. Ed Sanger recovered from his 19th starting position to take third while Johnny Jones held a firm grip on fourth place throughout the second half of the contest.

Phil Prusak, Red Steffen, and Punky Manor battled for fifth place during the final 25 circuit, swapping positions on nearly every straight-away and going into turns three abreast. Prusak finally took fifth, followed by Steffen and Manor.

Nesbitt dropped out on lap 26 with a flat tire and broke front suspension and Steuding suffered a broke lower frame on lap 44 while running third.
