1973 – Colella a Winner at Heidelberg

Heidelberg, Penn. (August 2, 1973) – Tom Colella, starting on the pole, jumped into the lead at the start and made every lap a winning one as he captured Thursday night’s 100-lap NASCAR Grand American marathon at Heidelberg Raceway.

Colella, whose also the track’s promoter, was driving the same car he uses in Pittsburgh Racing Association competition but had to install a smaller motor to conform to NASCAR regulations.

The Whitehall, Penn., pilot, who had earned the pole position with a clocking of 20.42 seconds, never was threatened after the last couple of laps. NASCAR star Bobby Allison of Hueytown, Ala., made a couple of attempts at Colella for the lead but then faded back.

Tiny Lund of Cross, S.C., came on to take second place early in the race, and remained there for most of the race, but was a quarter of a lap behind Colella at the checkered.
