1970 – Montgomery Race Victor; Sexton hurt

Des Moines, Iowa (August 15, 1970) – Newcomer Dean Montgomery of Milan, Ill., bested the State Fairground regulars and claimed the 30-lap late model feature Saturday night before a crowd of 7,035.

Montgomery, driving a 1969 Chevelle, led the final 23 circuits to op current point leader Dick Oldham of Des Moines and Stan Stover of Reinbeck.

Sonny Morgan of Blue Earth, Minn., driving a 1957 Chevy, won the 15-lap sportsman feature ahead of point leader Phil Reece of Des Moines and Buzzy Sampson of Des Moines.

A crash on the first lap of the sportsman feature sent Charlie Sexton of Des Moines to the hospital and demolished his 1955 Chevy.

Sexton was reported in serious condition with a head injury and possible eye injury after his car flipped several times on the straightaway.

Shorty Selsor of Des Moines and Darrel Dake of Cedar Rapids won late model heat races while Oldham won the semi-main in his 1969 Chevelle.

Jim Hanson and Jerry Cron, both of Des Moines notched heat victories in the sportsman division while Joe Merryfield of Des Moines won the semi-main.
