1968 – 9,500 Watch Stott Win KK 100-Lapper

Kaukauna, Wis. (August 4, 1968) – Ramo Stott, Keokuk, Iowa, piloting a 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner, survived the sweltering heat on Sunday afternoon, and went on to win the 100-lap late model stock car race at KK Sports Arena before a crowd of well over 9,500.

With the temperature hovering at 95 degrees on the track, Stott took the lead on the 19th lap from Gene Marmor of River Grove, Ill., who was driving a ’67 Chevelle, and started his bid for the checkered flag, which he took 81 laps later.

The race was stopped on two separate occasions. On lap 24, Dave Emmel of Rockford, Ill., started fishtailing coming out of turn four after tangling with Kimberly’s Clyde Schumacher, and went spinning down the front chute, causing both drivers to slam into the wall, directly in front of the grandstand.

Emmel was shaken up, placed in an ambulance, but he didn’t require hospitalization. Schumacher was uninjured.

The red flag was dropped on lap 74 when eight-time IMCA national champion Ernie Derr, Keokuk, Iowa, driving a ’68 Dodge Charger, came sliding down the front straightaway with his car ablaze after blowing his engine. By the time the car came to a rest in the first turn, the fire was extinguished and Derr escaped uninjured.

Hard luck also hit Wisconsin’s winningest stock car ace, Dick Trickle, Wisconsin Rapids. On the 63rd lap, Trickle was forced to the pits with tire trouble, after running in second for 29 laps, just three seconds behind Stott. Losing eight laps in the pits, Trickle was unable to make up lost time.

In the second phase of what was billed as “Duo Features,” Clyde Schumacher, driving a ’67 Ford, was awarded the 50-lap mid-season championship race, from a field of 31 cars, the largest ever in a feature event. Dick Trickle crossed the finish line first in the contest but was spotted by judges passing on a previous caution flag, thus penalizing him an entire lap.

Bob Moehring of Little Chute won the 15-lap Figure-8 event.
