1963 – Ozark Empire Win to Reed

Springfield, Mo. (August 11, 1963) – Dale Reed of Wichita, Kan., moved up from fourth place in the last half of the race to win the 15-lap feature in the Ozark Empire Fair’s big car racing program Sunday afternoon before 4,500.

Pete Folse of Tampa, Fla., who won Saturday afternoon’s feature, slipped to fourth place as Bill Burdick and Jim McCune grabbed the second and third-place spots that weren’t decided until the final lap.

Reed’s winning time was 7 minutes and 4.36 seconds.

Herschel Wagner of Hickman Hills crashed through the fence in the early part of the second heat race and was hospitalized overnight for observations of chest injuries.

After the restart, Jim Moughan of Springfield, Ill., edged Gary Jones of Atwater, Calif., at the end of the wheel-to-wheel duel over seven laps.

Reed also won the 4-lap handicap match race and the 10-lap consolation. McCune set the pace in the first heat and Curly Boyd of Indianapolis took the third heat.
