Sedalia, Mo. (August 18, 1963) – A rain-slicked track that dried lightning fast, gave some 12,500 racing fans an added bonus in thrills Sunday afternoon at the Missouri State Fair.
The winner of the 50-lap feature over the half-mile dirt oval was Dick Hutcherson who grabbed the lead on the first lap and was never headed.Finishing second but out of contention was Ernie Derr, while Ramo Stott, because of a broken fan belt on his 1963 Plymouth, failed to finish.
The win moved Hutcherson, who pilots a 1963 Ford, into second place in the point standings ahead of Pontiac pilot Derr by a scant handful of points and within almost the same distance of Stott.
All three drivers call Keokuk, Iowa, home.
Hutcherson’s 23 minute and 34 second clocking in the feature knocked nearly two minutes off the old standard set by Derr last year. The 10-lap record fell in the match race when Chub Liebe, Oelwein, Iowa, shot his ‘63 Ford in ahead of Stott and Johnny Beauchamp, Harlan, Iowa, 1962 Chevrolet, in 4 minutes and 38 seconds, eclipsing Stott’s old mark.
