1963 – Daniels Cops Big Car Win at Chippewa Falls

Jerry "Scratch" Daniels

Chippewa Falls, Wis. (August 4, 1963) – Jerry Daniels of St. Paul, Minn., gained the lead on the first turn and gradually pulled away from the field in the 15-lap Grand Championship at the Northern Wisconsin District Fair’s big car speed races Sunday afternoon before 2,500 fans.

The victory was the first of the season for Daniels under International Motor Contests Association sanctioning. He won an IMCA-sanctioned race at the St. Louis County Fairgrounds in Hibbing, Minn., last year on August 5.

Pete Folse, who won a feature event a week ago on the same track, and had set fast time, won his heat race and the special 4-lap trophy dash on this day, was disqualified at the start of the main event.

Folse, of Tampa, Fla., and the all-time point leader in IMCA competition, was given the black flag by race promoter and starter Frank Winkley when he jumped the green flag at the start of the contest.

Jumping the flag at the start is a violation of IMCA rules as cars must be in their assigned starting positions when the “go” green flag is waved.

It was the second violation of the day for Folse.

In the fracas of warning Folse at the start of the feature, Winkley was bumped by one of the cars and knocked to the track. However, according to reports from officials, he received a few bruises and continued on to fulfill his obligations.

Daniels’ winning time for the 15-lap feature was 7 minutes and 25 seconds.

Coming in second was Jerry Richert of Forest Lake, Minn., who was returning to racing after a two-month layoff for shoulder separation suffered in an accident.

Al Fredenberg of Madison, John Leverenz of Hayward, Calif., and Ron Larson of White Bear Lake rounded out the top-five finishers.

Some of the drivers who competed here last week, including Bill Horstmeyer, Gordon Woolley, Harold Leep, Sonny McDaniels, and Don Brown, were involved in an accident at the Knoxville, Ill., track on Saturday and were unable to return.
