Tom Hearst
West Liberty, Iowa (June 8, 1985) – Late model competitor Tom Hearst of Wilton captured the Winston 50 Saturday night at West Liberty Raceway and continues his domination of the late model racing at the half-mile.
Darrell Dake of Cedar Rapids, who started third, led the first 24 laps as Hearst made his way through the field from his 11th starting position.Hearst took the lead from Dake at the halfway mark of the race, with an inside move in the third turn and was never seriously challenged after that.
Tony Stewart of Washington would get by Dake on lap 36 to take over second but would lose that spot to Roger Dolan of Lisbon on lap 43.
The victory for Hearst was his fifth of the season and he’s the only driver to win a late model feature at West Liberty in 1985. Dolan, Stewart, Dake, and Rollie Frink rounded out the top-five.
Merv Chandler of Cedar Rapids made his first appearance of the season worthwhile as he not only won the regular IMCA modified feature but the make-up feature as well.
Ron Fare of Hiawatha won his fourth street stock feature of the year. Bart Montgomery of Tipton borrowed his brother Britt’s car to win the bomber feature.
