Eddie Sachs, driving the Cheesman #2, won the 30-lap big car event at Winchester.
Winchester, Ind. (September 9, 1956) – Eddie Sachs of Greensboro, N.C., won the 30-lap main event of a big-car program at Funk’s Winchester Speedway on Sunday afternoon, but Pat O’Conner, Mt. Vernon, Ind., who finished second, retained his lead in the United States Auto Club Midwest point standings.
Sachs was running third until lap 13 when Andy Linden of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and O’Conner, running 1-2 at the time, locked wheels and went into a spectacular spin. Miraculously, both drivers brought their cars under control and were able to continue in the race.O’Conner remained in second place, but Linden dropped back to ninth place. Bob Veith of Modesto, Calif., was the third driver across the finish line.
O’Conner was the fastest in qualifying, negotiating the half-mile high-banked oval in 19.06 seconds.
The USAC-sanctioned program was the last of the season at Winchester.
