1975 – Sanger is Fair Super Stock Champ

Des Moines, Iowa (August 21, 1975) – Ed Sanger’s car and the Iowa State Fairgrounds’ half-mile proved a winning combination on Thursday as the Waterloo, Iowa, driver captured the Iowa State Super Stock Championship.

Sanger, who also won the second heat, took the lead on lap 8 from second-place finisher John Connolly of Delhi, Iowa, and stretched that margin to six car lengths at times despite two cautions that allowed the field to close up.

In the 25-lap feature, Bill Rice of Des Moines smacked the wall extremely hard in his 1973 Camaro and clipped a car driven by Larry Rummelhart of Riverside, Iowa.

The impact of the crash caused Rice to spin in the air and tore the rear end completely away from the rest of the body as flames momentarily shot from underneath. Rice was shaken up but not injured.

Mel Morris of West Liberty, Iowa, finished third in the feature while Lem Blankenship of Keokuk, Iowa, grabbed fourth. Don Hoffman of De Moines rounded out the top five.

Bob Hilmer of Dysart, Iowa, Sanger, Ron Weedon of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, and Connolly were heat winners. Ron Prymek of Iowa City and Perry Beckler of Tiffin, Iowa, waged a two-man battle in the consolation with Prymek steering his ’75 Chevelle to victory.
