Ramo Stott accepts his trophy while announcer Jimmy Glenn is ready to interview the winner and IMCA's Gene Van Winkle presents the checkered flag.
Sedalia, Mo. (August 20, 1967) - Ramo Stott showed everybody the short – and quick - way around the half-mile racetrack Sunday with a record-shattering victory in the 50-lap feature for International Motor Contest Association late model stock cars.
Pushed the whole distance by Ernie Derr, also of Keokuk, Iowa, Ramo punched his 1967 Plymouth to new 1, 25, and 50-lap records before a standing room only crowd of some 11,000 fans.Stott got the afternoon under way by shattering the qualifying trials record with a 26.10 second lap, then went on to set a blistering pace in the feature.
In the late stages of the event Stott was turning laps as quick as 24.79 seconds.
“Every time I came off a turn, I’d look up in the mirror and I’d see his (Derr’s) grille right on my back bumper. You better believe that’ll make you really get with it,” he said.
The record for the 50 laps was 22 minutes, 24.03 seconds, more than one and a half minutes quicker than the record set in 1963 by Dick Hutcherson, now a Southern stock car racing circuit star.
It was a hard afternoon on equipment. Several driver s blew engines and at least one such occurrence caused what might have been a serious accident except for a sturdy roll cage.
Charley Johnson of Miller, Mo., lost an engine in the third turn of the consolation race, and with the car’s back wheels locked up he slid into the guardrail, then rolled over it twice before coming to rest on his wheels. He emerged unscathed, with a broken spring and bent body work the only major damage to his 1964 Ford.
