Bobby Isaac
Springfield, Ill. (August 20, 1965) – Bobby Isaac of Catawba, N.C., won the 100-mile Allen Crowe Memorial race for late model stock cars Friday afternoon at the Illinois State Fair, finishing three-car-lengths ahead of Paul Goldsmith of Munster, Ind.
Isaac lost the 200-mile race at the Wisconsin State Fair on Thursday when he ran out of gas with three laps to go while leading.Isaac, Norm Nelson of Racine, Wis., the winner at Milwaukee on Thursday, and Goldsmith ran far ahead of the pack in a three-way battle for the winner’s share of the $15,000 purse.
Goldsmith led Isaac for 20 laps in the early going on the one-mile dirt oval. Isaac grabbed the lead for the last time on lap 83 and Goldsmith chased him across the finish line, about one second behind.
Isaac’s winning time was 1 hour, 16 minutes and 19.42 seconds, short of the track record of 1 hour, 7 minutes and 14.77 seconds.
The yellow flag was out for 14 laps after Sal Tovella of Addison, Ill., crashed into the outside wall in the second turn. Tovella walked away from the wreckage uninjured.
Officials first ruled that Isaac, then leading, was lapped by most of the field because he was involved in the crash.
But at lap 70, race officials announced that Isaac was not involved in the accident and that he was running second not last.
The speedster spurted past Goldsmith 13 laps later and then held on to the end.
Pole sitter Nelson, who set one-lap and two-lap qualifying records of 94.5 milers per hour, came in third.
Don White of Keokuk, Iowa, was fourth and open-wheel star Gary Bettenhausen of Tinley Park, Ill., took fifth.
