West Allis, Wis. (July 10, 1983) – After being plagued by an abundance of bad luck in 12 previous Milwaukee Mile starts, Alan Kulwicki found 13 to be his lucky number as he edged Bob Senneker to score his initial win at the track in Sunday afternoon’s Miller High Life 200.
“This is the biggest win of my career and certainly makes up for a lot of frustration here,” Kulwicki said. “I knew some day it would be my turn to win.”Kulwicki’s turn came Sunday as he wheeled his Firebird around Senneker to take the lead shortly after a restart on the 179th lap and then held off Senneker to take the victory by about one-car-length.
Joe Ruttman capitalized on a late tire change to come in third, ahead of Gary Balough. Mike Miller placed fifth, with Butch Miller sixth, Mark Martin seventh and Bobby Dotter eighth, to round out the list of lead lap finishers.
Despite 11 caution periods encompassing 52 laps, Kulwicki averaged a record 90.115 miles per hour in winning the 16th annual event, which was sanctioned by the American Speed Association for the second straight year.
Kulwicki took home $9,370 from a $71,575 purse.
