1973 - Gould edges Watson at Toledo

Toledo, Ohio (July 1, 1973) – Bruce Gould of Milford, Ohio, edged Bobby Watson of Louisville, Ky., to win the 100-lap ARCA national championship late model stock car event at Toledo Speedway.

The victory was Gould’s third in a row on the ARCA circuit and his second of the year at the Toledo track in the Stricker Auto Parts 1971 Ford Torino. Bruce started on the outside of the front row and took the lead at the drop of the green flag.

Gould led all the way with the exception of part of a lap when Watson pushed his 1973 Camaro into the lead. A. Arnold came on strong late in the race, passing Dave Dayton for third on lap 85.

Dayton finished fourth followed by Wayne Watercutter and Iggy Katona, on the same lap as the leaders. John Sellers was seventh, one lap down, and Delmar Clark finished eight, two laps down.

Sixteen of the 28 starters were still running when the checkers flew. Twenty-three laps of the race were run under caution and the red flag came out on lap 59 due to an accident that sent Dick Smith to the local hospital with a broken leg.
